Singapore Food Trip: Soya Galore

I did some revamp for my weekly blogging. Since I was back-logged with lots of pictures from Singapore. I dedicated Friday for Food! Yehey!
First off we have the Bean Curd Wars…
The soya industry in Singapore is a serious business. It\’s a fierce competition. Unlike taho in Pinas, it is served with caramelized sugar, tapioca and the beancurd. In SG, there are lots of variety available. So if it\’s your first time to try soya SG style it\’ll be a different experience. But it\’s delicious I tell you. First is the syrup. It\’s not caramelized at all but enough to give taste. I\’ve got used to the lesser sugar lifestyle.
I frequent the store because it\’s the same block with our flat. It\’s very convenient especially in the morning when I need my soya milk fix. They have different soya delicacies. Of course, they have the beancurd in different flavors (strawberry, chocolate and plain). They serve it hot/cold and costs 1.10 SGD.
They use Canadian Soybeans. The reason why the soya is smooth and soft. The owner (I\’ve read in a paper article) is a former banker went to Taiwan to master the art of soya. Their store is also a \”factory\” so buyers can see how the Bean curd are made. The place is clean and the storekeepers are very friendly.
Strawberry-flavored Bean Curd
I forgot the name of this food. It\’s interesting because the taste is a bit salty. All the while I thought it was sweet.

2. Mr. Bean

I go to Mr. Bean if I want to eat Mr. Bean Pancake with cheese filling. Delicious!

You can choose the sweetness level of you drinks and shake. I always go for 50% – moderate

I love how their pancake mix, doesn\’t give that moist feel after chewing. Their serving is big and puffy as well even if exposed to the room air. Unlike the ones from Jollibean.

Super favorite: Icy Chocolate Soya Milk Shake

3. Jollibean

Though their pancakes are not my favorites. I love their Iced Dark Chocolate Soy half sugar, my usual order. It\’s either my break time or after morning shift food. They have a stall in my former workplace. I also get to avail of employee discount! The \”aunties\” know me as a frequent customer that seeing me from afar they already know what I like. As if they are reading my mind. I think they \”hate\” me in a way. Because if its lunch time and the queue is long it takes time to make the iced drink. It causes longer queues. But it\’s OK, I still buy from  them hehehe.
The Regular soymilk, they serve it cold without ice if you want it cold. No ice tricks at all. You ask for a regular size it\’s filled to brim. Should I say SULIT!!!!
For tourists/visitors in SG, for a quick on-the-go snack, try their soya selections. It\’s healthy and nutritious. And cheap trick as well. Though for the well-known brands their prices are higher most of the time. But it\’s still worth a try. Though I can\’t confirm if it\’s Halal, the best that you can do is to look for the Halal seal and certification in the store. Better yet, ask the store personnel.

Hikosen Cara

What is Hikosen Cara?

Hikosen Cara products are the wide range of cotton items including Garments, aprons, bags, zakka ( small items for various purposes) and home accessories. All of them are designed from Japan with special Cats and Dogs characters. We issue about 100 new styles with 10 colors every month. All brand names have already registered and designs are copyrights reserved.  —SOURCE

I encountered Hikosen Cara year 2010, while window shopping in Takashimaya. I love the cat designs. So cute! It\’s very soft, plush and smooth. Very different from the stuffed toys that I\’ve known.
O-hai!
I originally want this bolster-like kitty. By the time I decided to buy one, it was sold out.
The price tag was steep. I made it a point, to look at it every pay day. Come Christmas time, I bought it! I can\’t stand my own resistance. I never regret getting it.
I got the smiling fat kitteh

What I like about the Hikosen Cara line is they have different design for every season. Once you get a toy, you won\’t be seeing the same design again. They also have other products like, aprons, bags, kid\’s shoes, duvet et. al. A nice gift idea to infants, toddlers, preschoolers and children ages 6-8 years old  (Don\’t look at me, I\’m a child at heart ;P).
I would love to buy lots but, it\’s really expensive. Time passed by,  their space in Takashimaya was gone. Even their branch in Bugis Junction. I wasn\’t able to visit their store in HK, so I lost hope and settled with what I have.
During my recent trip to Vietnam, I accidentally discovered them again in Diamond Plaza. Imagine my delight! I could\’ve vomited rainbows. I\’m so happy! All of their novelty items are available in Vietnam.

But I didn\’t get one until I leave for Ho Chi Minh City. I bought my items (a day before I go to Hanoi) in the Vincom Center Branch.

Hikosen Cara Heaven!
They have piggy plushies.
The staff are very accommodating and courteous despite the language barrier. Too bad, I wasn\’t able to get their names. They helped me pack my purchases. They even gave me discounts for hoarding buying a lot. The prices are way cheaper compared to SG. The plushie that I have are sold 75% less and it\’s a regular price.

The store supervisor, offered me a store membership. I respectfully declined since, I\’m  a tourist and I can\’t tell when I\’ll be back. She gave me these cute cellphone/bag accessory instead.

I walked back to the hotel, with a huge smile on my face. I got my sibs and cousin their neck pillows. I couldn\’t get them the plushies because I\’ll be travelling to Hanoi for the next three days. I only have a small luggage and must stick to the baggage requirement.

Till next time!  🙂

Ikea and Anchorpoint

I love Ikea restaurant\’s Swedish horse meatballs well that is aside from their home furnishings (Even if it was horse meat, it was delish and nothing happened to me, bletch!).

At times if I\’m bored or just want to get out of the house, I come here to window shop. It\’s just nice to look at Ikea showrooms. It\’s amazing how they can maximize the use of a small space and either make it look glam, homey, minimalist, child-proof etc. in a modern way.

I have this bedsheet and pillow case.

After some eye-strain in the shop. Time to eat!

My usual: Cheesecake (the cheapest but one of the tastiest cheesecake that I\’ve had), meatballs and garden salad to-go. The rest of the plates is my roomie Sharon\’s meal. That we will eventually share. Spell TAKAW.
I love the Ketchup dispensers. Squirt-squirt…
After the delectable feast. You can go shopping again in Anchorpoint, right in front of Ikea. For budget shoppers you can get your Cotton On, Charles and Keith, Billabong on big discounts. These are outlet store branches. So get ready for a shopping adventure.
I was able to get a Cotton On mullet skirt and shirt for $5 each. A big steal as compared with their mall prices.
Enjoy!

Deepavali

Late post.
Before I start, I want to greet my Indian friends and colleagues a Happy Thaipusam Festival. I was Orchard Road today and saw a lot of people in Dhoby Gaut. This is the second time that I experienced Thaipusam Festival from inside bus 190. I just admire their faith. I think pain is nothing when you devote your life to God.
                              Deepavali
So off with my late post…Super late if I may add.
It was my  first to experience Deepavali. Ate Brenda, our host, welcomed us with open arms. She treated us like family that made it more awesome. According to Ate Brenda Deepavali / Diwali is the Festival of Lights.

                                                Deepavali
Ate Brenda shared a lot of interesting facts about the Indian culture. It\’s declared as a Public Holiday (PH) in Singapore and India. Expect a congested Little India especially the Mustafa Centre. They buy lots of garments and accessories, food etc. a few weeks  before.
Deepavali
Ate Brenda second from left.
The food is simple. I like how the mutton curry was cooked. The meat was tender, making it easier to chew. Black pepper prawns and Spicy Chicken are all good. Pair it with bread and you\’ll be full in few minutes.

                                Deepavali

Murukku, the crunchy snack from India. Fave!

Booze!

We also did henna tatoo by Ate Brenda\’s niece. I forgot her name but, she\’s one creative gal.

Deepavali
Ate Brenda\’s brother-in-law. He\’s been to the Philippines a few times. He specifically remembers Mabini Street where he hangs out. Just to get hold of our cheap alcoholic bevs. I ask him to marry a Filipina. He\’s still looking…
Deepavali
He can sing Tagalog songs. His favorite Filipino singers are Gary V. and Renz Verano. He loves singing karaoke.

4 Fingers Crispy Chicken

Eating in 4 Fingers Chicken is another sissy Cha\’s \”Happiest day of my Life\” moment. Well, I can\’t blame her this Korean-recipe is delicious! I also adore the chicken size and servings. Another discovery via my ina-idol blogger Chuvaness.
Level-up with their queue chips.

The most accessible store that they have is at ION Orchard. I think their recipe has something to do with glaze that they apply after frying the chicken. They look mabenta. They\’ve expanded their ION branch and there are more available seats.
Cool light installations
Chicken wrap-ish/sandwich-y type….nah try it and check out their menu it\’s delicious. Then stalk them afterwards

4 fingers is a whole lot different from Bonchon Chicken. That I have yet to try…
