Chocolates

Ever since the world began… I love chocolate. I\’m very particular with it being as purely chocolate. I don\’t want any nuts, almonds or whatsoever. I find it intrusive of the chocolate\’s taste (this is to no offense for people who loves chocs with nuts et.al.).  As I grow older I learned to appreciate its other form and texture (but still no nuts for me).  People are getting creative and artisanal chocolates are starting to have a niche in the pop market. The choices are endless.

1. Theo and Philo

Cacao from Davao, Sugar from Bacolod

At our factory, each batch of chocolate is produced in small quantities (actually, it would be \”micro\” in industry standards) and overseen personally by people instead of machines. We take great care, time and effort to ensure that each step starting from the selection of the cacao bean to the final step of molding and packing, we are only offering the best we can offer.-Philo, Founder

First saw them in TFC as Pinoy\’s who makes a difference. Yup they are making waves. Who would\’ve thought that Philippine Lemon and Dark chocolate can make a nice combination. Though I have yet to try it because the last time I dropped by at the Team Manila Store in SM MOA they are sold out.
Got this from @lucytgomez\’\’s instagram.
I tried their milk chocolate variant. I like it because it doesn\’t melt quickly and not that sweet. It feels lightweight when you\’re chewing it so it doesn\’t really stick too much in between the teeth ( but toothbrushing is still a must after eating chocs).

2. Royce

ROYCE\’ was founded in Sapporo in 1983. Through acquiring the best techniques and enriching our experience, we are able to make chocolate of world-class quality in Hokkaido where the climate and the clean air are ideal for making confections. The fundamental principle of Royce\’ has been and will always be the painstaking sourcing of high quality ingredients. —-SOURCE

I found out about Royce from ina-idol na blogger Chuvaness.
I got a first taste of it when I got lost in Makati and stumbled upon Greenbelt. They offer free taste for certain products. I tasted one of the Nama chocolate. I felt the Ratatouille fireworks again. If  at that time I\’m not in my sanity, I could\’ve just grabbed the jar from the salesperson  and eat everything. It\’s very delicious and not that sweet!!! Out of my price range so I just settled to fantasize about it.
I just want to thank God for the opportunity of affording it now. One of my guilty pleasures every pay day.
Chocolate Bar

Chocolate Truffles. My favorite is the one with champagne (Pierre Mignon)

3. Mark and Spencer\’s Tea Cakes

In our side of the world we call it Chocolate Mallows. Though we also have our own version. I like the M&S version better because of the soft biscuit base.
I remember when I was in college, I was selling chocolate mallows to have extra baon. And we also used to sell it (together with cookies and crackers) as a fundraiser during our Community Health Nursing. Through a kakilala, I was able to get directly from the factory at a lower price. I\’m not sure this factory in Mamplasan are still making mallows. This said mallows are almost magka-level with the tea cakes.
Yum!
Till next chocolate adventure!

Deepavali

Late post.
Before I start, I want to greet my Indian friends and colleagues a Happy Thaipusam Festival. I was Orchard Road today and saw a lot of people in Dhoby Gaut. This is the second time that I experienced Thaipusam Festival from inside bus 190. I just admire their faith. I think pain is nothing when you devote your life to God.
                              Deepavali
So off with my late post…Super late if I may add.
It was my  first to experience Deepavali. Ate Brenda, our host, welcomed us with open arms. She treated us like family that made it more awesome. According to Ate Brenda Deepavali / Diwali is the Festival of Lights.

                                                Deepavali
Ate Brenda shared a lot of interesting facts about the Indian culture. It\’s declared as a Public Holiday (PH) in Singapore and India. Expect a congested Little India especially the Mustafa Centre. They buy lots of garments and accessories, food etc. a few weeks  before.

Ate Brenda second from left.
The food is simple. I like how the mutton curry was cooked. The meat was tender, making it easier to chew. Black pepper prawns and Spicy Chicken are all good. Pair it with bread and you\’ll be full in few minutes.

                                Deepavali

Deepavali
Murukku, the crunchy snack from India. Fave!
Deepavali
Booze!

We also did henna tatoo by Ate Brenda\’s niece. I forgot her name but, she\’s one creative gal.

Deepavali
Ate Brenda\’s brother-in-law. He\’s been to the Philippines a few times. He specifically remembers Mabini Street where he hangs out. Just to get hold of our cheap alcoholic bevs. I ask him to marry a Filipina. He\’s still looking…
Deepavali
He can sing Tagalog songs. His favorite Filipino singers are Gary V. and Renz Verano. He loves singing karaoke.

Food, Coffee, Movie

Chedz, Kem, Vic, Erm
I was given the chance to have a longer days off from work. Unwinding is an open option. I preferred to spend it with friends this time.
First off, to check out what is in store for island invasion of Gerry\’s Grill.
Located @ 51 Cuppage Road Singapore 229469…It\’s quite difficult to find just take note from Og in Orchard Road go inside the street where you can see the Cuppage Terraces. Walk straight ahead then you can see the Starhub Centre facing Holiday Inn. You can see it quickly because it\’s just outside the entrance of the building.
The menu is not similar to what we have in Manila. The best, from what we\’ve eaten was the Grilled Squid (sotong). It\’s juicy and easy to mechanically digest.  The price is also affordable and reasonable.

We are really hungry. No food shots for now.
For me and Ate Erm\’s case, after our food trip we went to watch a movie. Something to break the spell of her movie-watching-in-the-cinema-drought. Thus the movie review of how hot is Colin Farrell  of Total Recall.
Then another coffee date for me, Chedz and Kem.
I know that this is some gasgas na kapehan for some. I just took a picture because I\’m amazed on how this coffee shop tends to appear in some unexpected location.
This shop is located beside a mall in level with its basement floor. I just hope I was able to take a pic of the whole thing. i find it amazing. Wait till I visit again the bridge near the Merlion. I swear there\’s a SB located under the bridge!
For some vietnamese treats. I was with my photo buddy Vic to bond and talk about photography in my not-even-near-an-amateur-knowledge and his lumelevel-na-knowledge. He asked me why Vietnamese food. Just a craving (and my anticipated visit in that country- in my head). I showed him my wedding photos afterwards.

Thanks for the time guys 🙂

What\’s Cooking?

I always say food brings people together, no matter where it takes place and what kind of food is being served. It is something universal that everyone enjoys and it can be a bonding experience for all. – Moonberry blog

I have to agree with Ms. Moonberry, FOOD = togetherness. I enjoy reading blogs, looking at photos, spending time with family and friends that involves eating and bonding.

Its just that, the past few days that I\’ve been working and cooking for my baon. Most of the time, I\’m alone. I don\’t mind eating alone it\’s just that, eating could be more fun if I eat together with my husband, my sibs, mom and dad. I miss them really. Especially now that I\’m experimenting on cooking and trying out healthier options with it.

That is in preparation of being a hostess for our visitors, friends on my future address. As my husband told me that I should know more a lot about recipes which beforehand I\’m already trying to. Food mags, TLC southeast asia, pinterest, food blogs, get-togethers, old recipes and travels has been my source of inspiration for cooking

Clockwise from top left: Stir-fried lean pork, Lean pork with corn, Lean pork with broccoli, Adobong, manok (My fave!)
Pasta with tomatoes and oiled sardines, menudo with roasted peanuts, Menudo with roasted peanuts, and the Lean pork with broccoli again.

It\’s fun to experiment and its cheaper with home cooked meals mind you especially if you\’re with a good crowd. Priceless…
A Happy Sunday to Everyone
XOXO

Chef Icon: Au Naturel

Ate Cynthia and her Chocolate Trovana Cake
I\’ve tasted this scrumptious cake during our meeting in the workplace. I can\’t get over it. Really!  I found out from my housemate Ate Cynth about this bakeshop in Kampung Bahru Road. I was like \”Hey! I see that shop everyday from work!\” Good thing, Renze gave Ate this luscious Chocolate Trovana cake that stirred my curiosity. Good thing,  I ate this cake for free, twice.
It\’s just across the street

After one busy work day, I dropped by at Chef Icon to see the goodies. The place is a cozy bakery and coffee shop where the smell of bread is a delight for my olfactory nerves. Artisanal breads and pastries are all over but what attracted me are the cakes. The counter is manned by the uber-friendly Chef Francis. He helped me with that to get. We also got to chit-chat a little about cakes, Philippines and work.

They adopt the Avina.Neutro Baking style, which makes their products healthier. Their products contain:

  • No Animal Meat
  • No Liquor
  • No Margarine
  • No MSG

  • No Chemical Bread Improvers
Since then, every payday I indulge myself to some au naturel sweetness.
Clockwise from left Cookies and Cream Cheesecake, Dark Chocolate Tiramisu, Chef Icon box packaging and Chocolate Marble Cheesecake
I tried the American Carrot Cake first. I\’m not a fan of fruit cakes primarily but it\’s not that bad. Just OK. As for the cheesecakes…HEAVENLY! Creamy, not too sweet, tasty and light on the stomach. It was a \”Ratatouille\”  moment…there\’s fireworks 🙂

Another Grin Affair

I was only able to come around again after quite sometime. But like what Jody said the important thing is I came back. The next time I\’m there, I\’ll show Jody my wedding pics. I have 3 jars in my loot, I\’ll be returning it back soon. And its nice to know they already have a website.

The place was packed when I came, so I have no other choice but to take out these lovelies. Looks like grin affair has already gained some loyal customers. Well, who won\’t notice a different kind of dessert coming from a jar.

Mango Mousse (If I\’m not mistaken)
Every ingredients compliments the recipe to make it stand-out. Its not too sweet, not too creamy. Perfect for those who are diet-conscious.
Kiwi Cheesecake

The chocolate crispies on top is a surprise for me. The vanilla cake is soft and chewy. And again, not too sweet. The kiwi is fresh as if it was just cut after I ordered it.

Will be back soon.
